Ben Whittaker lightweight lightweight (9-0-1, 6 kos) scored a technical tie of the second round of veteran Liam Cameron (23-7-1, 10 kos) in his comeback on Sunday night at the World Arena Resorts in Birmingham, England.
The 2020 silver Olympic medalist, Whittaker, struck Cameron with a loop right in the second round. Then he went for the slaughter, throwing wild shots and with the two hands that supported his wounded enemy against the ropes.
Ben unloaded a strong punch barrier while Cameron covered behind his guard. The referee Howard Foster later stepped on him and stirred him, though prematurely. Cameron seemed 100% well because he had blocked many of Whittaker’s wild punches. The referee, Foster, made a tactical mistake doing it, but this is the same referee who stopped prematurely the first struggle of Carl Froch vs. George Groves in 2013.
Whittaker had been mostly in the fight before the stoppage. From time to time, he threw his right hand, but his energy was throwing weak daggers and using his left as a straight arm illegal to prevent Cameron from approaching. Foster never warned Whittaker about this illegal tactic and should do so because this was his main defensive strategy to prevent Liam from approaching.
In the first lap, Cameron followed Whittaker around, similar tense and did not release his hands. Near the end of the round, he tagged Whittaker with a big right hand that caught him. Ben took off after eating this shot. A few moments later, Whittaker took Cameron in a Cloquet to prevent his assault on.
By frustration, he nailed Whittaker with a rabbit punch to let him go. The referee immediately stopped the action and gave Cameron a severe warning. This was the first rabbit punch that had thrown in the fight. It should not have been so great, but Foster was playing strict with the B -side fighter.
