Google sued 5 billion pounds in the UK for abuse of domination in search

London – Google sues more than £ 5 billion ($ 6.6 billion) potential loss in the UK for allegations that the US giant abused its “almost total domination” in the search online market to raise prices.

The UK in the court’s lawsuit filed on Wednesday, claiming Google has abused its position to limit competing search engines and, in turn, to reinforce its dominant position on the market and make itself the only viable place to search on the Internet.

It is brought by the Academic or Brook Competition on behalf of hundreds of thousands of organizations based in the UK, which used Google advertising services from January 1, 2011, by the time when the lawsuit was filed. It is represented by a law firm Geradin Partners.

“Today in the UK, businesses and organizations, big or small, have virtually no other way out how to use Google advertising to advertise its products and services,” Brooke said on Tuesday. “Regulators around the world describe Google as a monopoly and securing a place on Google’s main pages is important for visibility.

“Google uses its dominance in the common market search and search market to overpay advertisers,” she added. “This class action is to prosecute Google for illegal practice and search for compensation on behalf of British advertisers who have been overpaid.”

Google was not immediately available for comments when referred to CNBC.

Market study in 2020 from competition and markets (CMA) – UK competition regulator – showed that 90% of all search engine revenues were obtained by Google.

The lawsuit claims that Google has taken a number of steps to restrict competition in search, including the conclusion of smartphone manufacturers to pre-install Google and Chrome Search on Android devices and pay the Apple billions to provide the default search engine in Safari browser.

It also claims that Google guarantees that advertising search tools search 360 offers better functionality and more features with its own advertising product than competitors.
