As mysterious illness robbed overcrowded cities, the richest citizens escape to the countryside to stay out the disease in safety. Sounds familiar? Sure, it happened in 2020 with the Covid-19 pandemic, but also describes Florence in the mid-1300s when the black plague was deteriorating the population.
Somehow, showrunner Kathleen Jordan She turned this into a comedy – and made her with great success. The decameronwhich is very loosely based on the 14th -century collection of short stories by Giovanni Boccaccio, is one of Netflix’s most under -complete comedy series currently streaming. Here are a few reasons why you should watch it in April.

The decameron Starts with a series of invitations sent to the rich Elite of Florence, inviting them to asylum in the rural estate of the Visconte Leonardo.
Unfortunately, by the time the noblemen reach the villa, Leonardo has died of the plague. It’s up to Sirisco (Tony Hale), steward of the estate, to hide the truth about Leonardo’s demise and break his increasingly challenging guests.

NetflixOne of the greatest stylists The decameron Is former Hale Comedy -Chronicle, best known for his work on Arrested development and Peg. Like Sirisco, Hale masteres an incredible balance of panic and determination. Things in the villa go from bad to worse as leagues form between the ruined nobles and the servants, and Sirisco is caught in the middle constantly trying to please everyone.
But not only does Hale show his comedy chops. Sirisco is a more multilateral character than he has to play in the past, and the way he portrays a lust, guilt and grief shows how talented he is as an actor.

Due to its ensemble cast and multiple story lines, The decameron Can play with different styles of comedy. A slapstick, Monty Python-Esque’s physical humor, provided primarily by Douggie McMeekin Like Tindaro, an oafish and rustic aristocracy that happens to be a huge hypochondriac. Throughout the series, it is still falling down stairs, and it gets funnier with every fall.
There is also raunchy humor as the villa’s diverse residents begin to change romantic partners faster than musical chairs. Stories upstairs/downstairs about Villa staff showcase the show’s astute social satire like Cook Strilia (Leila farzad) and Sirisco Chafe on increasingly absurd requirements of the nobles. And there are barnal scenarios, over -the -top reminding someone of What do we do in the shadowsas when the group tries to distract and mislead a group of maritime monks.

Zosia mamet (Lady) plays pampinea, a noble woman with a truly terrible personality that is engaged to the visconte. Her closest ally and her confidante are Misia (Saoirse-Monica Jacksonof Derry Girls), and the show really casts attention on the toxic friendship between them. Pampinea uses Misia’s loyalty against her at all times, leaving the viewer wondering how much abuse it will take for Misia to finally break free.
On the other hand, The decameron the spotlights of an unexpected relative of sweet between the close gay nobleman Panfilo (Karan Gill) and his very religious wife Neifile (Lou gala). Although they both hide their secrets and aspirations from one another, their friendship is so sincere and moving that it could bring you to tears.
Other unexpected pair is the relationship similar to a sister between a self-absorbed filthy girl (Jessica Plummer) and his long-suffering handmaiden liscisca (Tanya Reynolds), as well as Doctor Dioneo Charlatan (Amar Chadha-Patel), who fascinate almost every girl in the cast.
By exploring more layered and complex relationships than the traditional romances or friendships we see in most comedies, The decameron stands out as truly unique.
Amar Chadha-Patel as Dioneo, Tanya Reynolds as Licisca, Tony Hale as Sirisco, Leila Farzad as Stratillia and Karan Gill as Panfilo in ‘The Decameron.’
NetflixThe decameron It does not wrap all its story lines with a neat bow. It is not a spoiler to reveal, in a show about the Bubonic pest, that not everyone does alive. Secrets that change friendship forever are revealed. Love is lost and earned. And the surviving characters are left with challenge.
They know that the world they live in is dangerous, dark and messy. But they find a way to face it with a sense of humor and optimism, knowing that they can rely on each other. It is a reminder that human beings have faced dreadful circumstances many times throughout history and survived somehow long enough to tell stories about it.
