Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra spoke about Rohit Sharma’s move to regain the starting spot for the fourth Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He said the captain accepted the call-up entirely for his own interest and not for the team.
Rohit Sharma is one of the main topics of Indian cricket. This is due to his failures for the team in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He has looked very torrid with the bat and has failed in all three matches he has played.
Rohit Sharma missed the first Test and then returned for the second match. He did not want to disturb the opening combination of Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul and hence made the selfless play while batting in the middle order in both the games.
However, in Melbourne, he returned to the opener, which meant that KL Rahul was asked to bat at No.3 and Shubman Gill was dropped from the team. Rohit Sharma, however, did not have a great start as the opener in both the innings and as a result, Rahul too could not get going, and India lost the match as well.
Aakash Chopra said that for the first time, Rohit Sharma got calls for himself and not for the team. The cricketer turned commentator said:
“For the first time in his career, he has got a call for himself. In the past, there have been calls for him. MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli got calls to move him from the middle order to the opener. Dhoni did it in ODIs, Virat did it in Tests because they wanted Rohit to fire.”
“For the first time, captain Rohit got a call and he went totally in his interest. It was not in the interest of the team. Let’s be very honest. It cannot be in the interest of the team because Rahul was opened very well. Shubman Gill did well in 2023. He is the second highest scorer. He has also played in difficult situations to be removed from the team.
Aakash Chopra said that for the first time in his captaincy, Rohit Sharma took the call for himself and it didn’t work. He also discussed whether the batsman would accept the call to be dropped for the Sydney Test. Speaking of the same, he said:
“All this is because Rohit was thinking about himself, not the best interest of the team. For the first time in his captaincy career. It did not go well. India could not draw.
“In the interest of the team, is he going to sit out the Sydney Test? I’m not saying he’s going to pull out, I’m just going into the Sydney Test saying ‘I can’t contribute.’ OK, let Rahul open the batting, let Shubman Gill bat at number 3 and let’s play Nitish at number 6′.
But will he take it? If he doesn’t take it, I’ll tell you why cricketers don’t accept these calls. Every cricketer believes that a lifetime must have taught him one thing: we can bounce back. We can turn it around. Maybe Rohit Sharma is thinking so. Will the selectors take this mid-tour call? Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar guys, you are spot on this time.”
