If you were brought up watching a snic in the ’90s then you also remember having nightmares every week after watching Are you afraid of the dark before going to bed. Served as an excellent primer for children to enter the horror genre, Are you afraid of the dark Places focus on the Macabre through her Storytelling and An anthology framework that reminds someone The twilight zoneBut tailored for a much younger audience.
Firing up the series for the first time in decades, I was wondering if the eerie little Leprechaun was hiding in the attic during the show’s presentation still scare the Bejesus out of me, and he certainly did. Well, it didn’t scare me as an adult, but it quickly reminded me of how scary I was when I was open to the first series at the age of six or seven.
What began as a search for nostalgic feed was a worthwhile journey down the lane of memories, such as Are you afraid from the dark Terrible but brilliant, well written but not too complicated when you consider the original audience of the intended series.
Are you afraid of the dark It has a simple narrative framework that focuses on midnight society – a group of teenagers gathering around a camp fire once a week with the intention of scarring the hell out of each other. Each member of the Midnight Association has their own personality and unique style of storytelling, and each week one of them presents a “for approval of the Midnight Society” a story before whisking the audience to whatever eerie place the narrative will take. Throughout each story, we meet interventions from the storytelling cycle as a means of breaking tension, and reminding the young audience at home that they hear stories made alone.
After being a fan of the scary stories to tell in the Dark Book Series, it’s easy to compare Are you afraid of the dark For Alvin Schwartz’s work because both intellectual properties use public domain fairy tales and urban legends to drive their stories telling, but with a unique turn. And out of respect for his congregation, Are you afraid of the dark ends most stories on a positive note, unlike Shchwartz books, which contained some of the most horrific pictures that a child could access in their elementary school library.
While fashion, habits and colloquial phrasing of the midnight society Are you afraid of the darkTheir bonding over scary stories catches up and reminds us all that the best way to pass the time is to sit around a camp and spin yarn that will help you overcome your fears, or, at least, explore them bravely.
A notable example of this can be found early in the run in season 1 “The Tale of Laughing in the Dark,” which includes Kristin (Rachel Blanchard) overcomes hearing clowns fearing fears as dissatisfied through Betty Ann’s story (Pare-Coull Rain) for Zeebo for Zeebo the EndOnly to be scared by Eric (Jacob Tierney), who rushes him while wearing a clown mask on the story collection, causing her to run away with the rest of the gang while the leader of the Midnight Society Gary (Ross Hull) turns off the community fire with his signature red bucket so he can catch up with them.
Have revisited Are you afraid of the dark For the first time as an adult, I have to say that I have impressed how well the horror anthology series is holding up, and it is no surprise that horror is my favorite genre to this day. If you have children who are curious about horror, and want to give them a la carte presentation to the genre, or you feel nostalgic for the times when all you needed was Saturday night, pizza, and too much caffeine way when hanging out with your friends and watching the tube, then Are you afraid of the dark Waiting for you on paramount+.
