Aaron Boone responds to the death of Brett Gardner Son Miller

New York Yankees Manager, Aaron BooneShare his response to the sudden death of a 14 year old Miller GardnerBoone’s friend’s son and a former player, Brett Gardner.

“We’re talking about being a family all the time and although Brett has been for a few years, that doesn’t stop,” Boone, 52, told reporters on Sunday, March 23, per New York Post. “Many people there (the club) know that family is close. It’s a very difficult day and very difficult news.”

Boone added, “To the best we can, we will pray for the Gardner family and where we can, offering support. That’s a kind of unimaginable that unfortunately that’s where we are with him. Very difficult.”

Gardner, 41, played each of his 14 MLB seasons with the Yankees before retiring after the 2021 season. The player’s last four seasons came out with Boone as the team manager, who took over duties in 2018.

Earlier in the day on Sunday, Gardner and his wife, Jessica. announced that Miller has died In a statement released by the Yankees.

“With heavy hearts we are sad to announce the passing of our youngest son, Miller,” read the statement. “He was 14 and has left us far too soon after becoming ill along with several other family members while on holiday. We have so many questions and so many answers at this point, but we know he died peacefully in his sleep on Friday morning, March 21st.”

The statement continued, “Miller was a dear son and brother and we could not yet understand our life without his infectious smile. He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, family and friends. He lived life to the full every day.”

The Yankees Foundation also released their own statement on Miller’s passing on Sunday.

“Our love of the Gardner family is unconditional and absolute, and we will offer our continued support in understanding their desire for privacy at this time,” read the statement in part. “May Miller rest in peace.”

Miller’s death was felt around the baseball community, including by the Manager of New York Mets, Carlos Mendoza.

“I would like to start by sending my thoughts and prayers to Jessica and Brett Gardner on the loss of his son,” Mendoza, 45, said during Sunday’s press conference. “Obviously I had a very good relationship with him. I think about it and the whole organization of Mets is thinking about Gardner’s family.”

Mendoza and Brett, 41, played together at the Yankees Small League Foundation between 2006 and 2007. Later, Mendoza Brett ruled during Mendoza’s time as a bench coach for the Yankees. Mendoza was employed as Mets manager in November 2023.

“I also got two boys, and they were pretty close,” added Mendoza.

Brett and Jessica also share an older son, Hunter. Meanwhile, Mendoza and his wife, Frances MendozaShared sons Recapture13, and Andres11.

No cause of death was announced to Miller.
