Remember in the ’90s when the Horizon: American saga Guy threw himself into an epic post-apocalyptic barrier that became a famous box office failure?
And then he did the same thing again?
Water Could he get all the attention, but another kevin costner stabbed a dystopian science fiction that we’re going to look at.
This is why The postman Failed.
Only two years after release Water. Kevin Costner starring in, production, and directing an adjustment of The postmanA famous novel by David Linel about post-apocalyptic America. A funny aspect of this are rare stated reasons for making the novel respond to the post-Crazy Max A boom of science fiction that caused the madness of the future of derelict land seems fun and exciting.
And Kevin Costner had just finished Mad Max RIP … We will call him homage with Water. It seems like The postman is a deliberate attempt by a costner to move into slower tools with a similar genre story. Both films even start with views about the purity of drinking water!
The basic idea of the novel and the film is that a wandering man who crosses America who has been eliminated comes across a deceased postal worker and their post. He takes the uniform and post from the body and begins to let people believe he is a real postman, leading to hope in the United States of America.
As far as comparisons with the novel, it seems The postman More or less takes the concept and some specific elements of David’s story and turn everything into something much, much more Hollywood.
So this was my first turn ever to see The postman But I had ever wanted to see it because I liked Water as a child. The things that kept me from venturing were The postmanRun nearly three hours and the overall negative critical response.
Now I always want to give credit where I feel it is due, so here are some highlights The postman After first watches.
Kevin Costner is a much funny actor than most people would realize from his most popular roles, and The postman allows him a character who can be goofy. It helps bring the character to the audience, as when he gets a hot bath and shaved and can’t help sing a silly little song.
Unfortunately, that feature wears thin and actually contributes to some of the film’s major problems that we will eventually enter.
But I’m waiting positive for the time being! Costner as Director has a sense of style and grandeur, probably best illustrated in the opening sequence of the film. It doesn’t catch up throughout the movie as we go in but it’s something.
Probably the thing I got most successful in The postman After engaging with the villain’s fascists led by Will Patton. The character of Patton is purposeful Stagey but I appreciated the film depicting the truly fascist belief evils and philosophies.
It reminds me of a problem with the first order in the Star Wars sequence trilogy. Those villains wear all traps of fascism without defining any solid moral beliefs ever or displaying any actual attachment to concrete fascist ideology. It’s a “get your cake and eat” method that gives the veneer of criticizing fascism in saying nothing about it actually, give Disney Safety net of any political shot.
But in The postmanThe bad guys do not wear armbands with a minimalist logo alone and that’s all the work the film does to show why they are bad. Members of this move talk openly about pure blood and eugenics while taking prisoners as potential new soldiers. They confidently use racist slugs against a black character. Their whole system of laws is displayed early to light it to its fascist ideology. The postman He doesn’t just want to tell you, “These guys are fascists and that means they are bad.” It shows why fascists are bad through their behavior and beliefs.
It sounds like a unneeded compliment, but given that I can’t even say some words on here without our lords going pissy, it is refreshing to be reminded of a lifetime where Hollywood and pop culture was not afraid of bad demand so bluntly and so on. If I can recommend one thing about it The postmanthat I commend his morality in recognizing and making an example out of the evils of fascism.
And that is the end of any praise I can largely give The postman Because this film suuuuuuuuuuuucks.
Costner vision for The postman Falls face first to ridiculously ridiculously too fast for a movie nearly three hours. The plot and pacing become laborious very quickly, and only after the sludge do they sink further into the sludge after a terrible romantic sub -blot seized a woman called Abby played by Olivia Williams. I do not blame Williams at all but these elements of the film are a complete failure.
Also, this movie is not fun to watch if you understand anything about editing moving images together. Geography, time and movement are mixed in several sequences.
Here’s just one very small example: the postman looks up at a horseback riding character, establishing a point-point direction for height. Then we cut close to Abby who apparently entered the scene off camera. We know she is at a higher level as the postman also seems to look up to acquaintance, but breaking to this near is not setting up her geography in the scene properly.
Then the next cut shows Abby on a horse. Here’s the problem: the previous shot had Abby close, his figure greatly on the right of the frame with lots of trees behind her. The very next image shows it small and to the left of the frame with outdoors behind it. It is an incompatible juxtaposition of images that you probably won’t be actively noticed in the moment, but this kind of poor editing and composition affects the processing of the visual information of your brain. You feel it, okay?
By the actual highlight to The postman Starting, you are over two hours in and there are still 45 minutes left. Any possible emotional investment has burned, which is Bummer as this is a game cast. Shouting to Daniel Von Bargen and Tom Petty showing since they helped me wake me up during this film.
And a costner itself deserves a lot of this fault. The postman Feels like a director’s fracture not only in duration but devoted. The costner’s goofier side clashes as hard as the sense of self-importance that the film puts in its century. Again, it leads to many juxtapositions that are more inconsistent than harmonious. The famous Legion’s heroic riding is probably the best example of this movie’s fomast working against its worthwhile and hearty messages. This is so stupid that it plays as a silly ad for the postal service.
There’s a lot about The postman To choose separately because too much film occurs. I didn’t even have time to make fun of Giovanni Ribisi’s character or manifest this guy that I can’t believe it hasn’t become a femace.
I have to imagine that Kevin Costner made that face when he saw the audience’s response to The postman in 1997. He opened in the spot #6 behind one of the worst sequences ever, American Wolf in Paris. The postman He tanked completely with a profit of $ 17.6 million against a reported $ 80 million budget.
So why exactly did The postman Failed except I agree with most critics that are not a good movie? There is no doubt that Costner makes another post-apocalyptic film so fast after the notorious mess of Water Make audiences very vigilant. And by comparison, Water at least sold itself as a huge action extravaganza. The postman He was almost as successful with his marketing and audiences did not feel worth three hours of their time.
As negatively as I have been in this video, The postman Proving that films can be almost completely unsuccessful in their general goals while continuing to touch on seconds, ideas, performances and emotions that work. And although I hated the film round, it became interested in reading the novel. And the default on its own appears to be mature for a red -made film or a TV series. The postman have already inspired other great modern science fiction stories and fiction worlds Stranding’s death and The last of us.
I’ll never watch The postman Again even if I support much of what he is trying to say from his heart. Sorry, Kev, but I’d rather watch Water.
