One of the big winners of 2023 was Ryan goslingwho won hearts, and Oscar nomination, for his turn as Ken in Greta GerwigHuge and commendable strikes, Barbian. But most of his career – who started side by side Britney Spears. Justin Timberlake and others in the New Mickey Mouse Club – Has been dominated by strange, dark roles that are definitely funny.
As an adult he first caught the attention of critics as a neo-Nazi Jewish in 2001’s The believer and then as a teacher addicted to heroin in 2006’s Half nelson. Followed that movie with 2007’s Lars and the real girlA sweet comedy that included it in a dedicated relationship with a sex doll.
One of his most underground and undergraduate films is Andrew Jarecki’s All good thingsa crime thriller inspired by the shocking real life case of Robert DurstWas her own magnifying glass in the true crime docuseries The jinx. Ment Kirsten DunstThe film was largely ignored when it was released in 2010, and is almost forgotten today. That’s all a crime on its own, as the film contains one of Gosling’s best performances and a story that rivets from start to finish.

Gosling plays David Marks, son of Tycoon’s rich real estate New York City Sanford Marks (Frank Langella). One day, David marries recklessly the class is Katie McCarthy (Dunst). Their relationship starts brilliantly: they move to Vermont, start a health food store called All Good Things, and establish a modest life that is completely different from David’s privileged upbringing.
Their reverie does not last as David cannot pull himself away from his father’s powerful influence. Soon, David has enlisted in the medical school to please Sanford and is beginning to neglect Katie. Things come to an end when Katie conceives, which disturb David’s plans. She does not want children for reasons that they are never fully explained, and she is definitely having an abortion that she really doesn’t want.
When Katie considers divorce and begins to accumulate evidence that will support her case, she suddenly disappears. What happened to her? And did David, or his influential family, have anything to do with him?

Magnolia photosThat’s just the beginning of a long, wonderful story that jumps on in time and includes not one but two mysterious deaths and trials with a shocking end. Some may call this plot too ridiculous to believe, and it may be, but because it is based on a real case, it is effective and eerie. The fact that this has happened in real life gives All good things Validity that many films in this genre do not have. No one boils rabbits or stabbed people with ice collections here – what you see fabricated, but based on real people and real events.
So immersed as All good things‘A story is, it would mean nothing if the cast were not as effective. Some props should be given to Dunst for a difficult role that may have devolved to be married who is continually complaining. That his Katie always sympathizes, and never pitiful, witnessing Dunst’s talent as an actress, who finds shades of depth in almost any role he incorporates. Later, she would have won awards for Melancholia and The power of the dogBut her work here is just as good and convincing.

Magnolia photosLet’s talk a little about the supporting cast of this film, which is solid with the two character actors you would expect in this kind of picture and comed actors that show themselves a different side. Like Sanford, Langella is wonderful as a corrupt patriarch who wants to rule his son. Nick Offerman and Christian wiig pop up, too, and as great as they are in comedies like Parks and leisure and MaidenFinally, their performances in this film make you want them to take on more dramatic roles.
He is a gosling, however, that dominates the film. His David is a lot of things: a loving man, a ungodly son -daf, and a man eventually torn between his own wishes and the ambitions of his family. You have to believe that Katie could fall in love with him and also believe he can kill her to get what he wants. Gosling plays both sides of this coin great, and its performance is just as often -layered as its later work The place beyond the pine and First man.

End All good things That’s not all surprising if you know anything about Durst’s case, but the main appeal of the film is Gosling’s performance as David, who can be as charming as Ken, but he is also a little more non -glem, and possibly dangerous. The film itself is a quiet excitement film that is less anxious with the value of shock than with painting a portrait of a man caught between two worlds and a woman who pays too high a price for his ambitions.
