Five people died as a result of the shooting near Dunkirk

Five people were killed in a shooting in northern France, including near a migrant camp, and a 22-year-old man turned himself in to police, French media reported.

Four people – two security guards and two migrants – were fatally wounded on the Lune Plage coast near Dunkirk, unnamed security sources in France said.

The gunman is also believed to have confessed to an earlier shooting in the nearby town of Wormhout, AFP reported.

Local media reported that a weapon had been found in the suspect’s car, and Dunkirk Mayor Patrice Vergriete said the motive for the attacks “remains unknown.”

BBC News has approached the local authorities for comment.

Vergriete called the incident a “tragedy” and said “a single person killed several people in cold blood” in the area.

Xavier Bertrand, head of the region’s assembly, confirmed on X that five people had died in a “tragic accident”.

French media reported a heavy presence of emergency services near the migrant camp, although it was unclear if the shooting took place in the settlement.

Loon Beach is home to several temporary migrant settlements. It is close to Calais and the Dover Strait, which is the narrowest part of the channel.

Similar camps along the northern coast of France were used by people trying to reach Britain in small boats.
