A surprise option in the middle of high expectations
The decision to designate Rahane, who was acquired by a modest INR 1.5 Crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction of Jeddah last year, is a surprise for many fans and analysts. The most expensive purchase of KKR, Venkatesh, got an impressive INR 23.75 CROR Shreyas iyer. Shreyas, who directed KKR to his third IPL title in 2024, was launched ahead of auction and later grabbed Kings punjab (PBKs) by INR 26.75 crore. Has also been named Captain of Punjab in early January.

Rahane’s appointment, however, reflects a strategic choice on the part of KKR’s management to prioritize the experience and tactical vision of youth exuberance at the helm. The 36-year-old brings a large number of leadership credentials to the table, having captured India to a historic test victory in Australia during the border-Gavaskar 2020-21 trophy and leading Mumbai to the Ranji trophy and the Iranian trophy in recent years. His experience of Captaincy IPL, although Mixed, includes tracks with Rajasthan Royals in 2018 and 2019, where he won nine wins in 24 games and a brief spell with Rising Pune supergiant in 2017.
