Manchester United Cup champions were eliminated from the competition in a dramatic penalty shootout, as Bernd Leno’s heroics won Fulham’s passage to the quarterfinals at Old Trafford.
The game ended 1-1 after 120 minutes, with Calvin Bassey giving Fulham an advantage of the first half before Bruno Fernandes was equalized by United in the second half.
The game saw moments of great drama, with the two goalkeepers making crucial savings, but Marco Silva’s side remained nerve in the penalty shot to move forward.
The United started brilliantly, with Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen trying Leno soon, while Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund had half a chance. However, Fulham became the game and Sasa Lukic missed a golden opportunity in the 37th minute when he directed the Alex Iwobi cross from close.
Just as half seemed to end, Fulham found his advance. Rodrigo Muniz met Andreas Pereira’s corner with a glittering head that found his way to Bassey in the distant post. The Nigerian International did not make a mistake, making the ball Andre Onana to send Fulham to the break with a 1-0.
United pushed an Igualada after the pause, with Alejandro Garnacho, introduced as a substitute, adding energy to his attack.
The hosts struggled to break down a well -organized Fulham defense until the 71st minute when Diogo Dalot handed a low cross to the box. Fernandes came to the perfect time, guiding the ball on the net with a first final to bring the United level.

The goal lit Old Trafford and United advanced in search of a winner. Garnacho had several occasions approached, and the adolescent substitute, Chido Obi-Martin, won the victory almost won in the time of stoppage, only for Leno to save crucial. At the other end, Onana denied Fulham Substitute Emile Smith Rowe with a finger stop to force extra time.
Both teams had possibilities over the extra time, with Ryan Sessegnon closer to Fulham when onana left their powerful strike.
Casemiro also shot from a distance when United tried to avoid penalties. However, neither side was able to find a decisive goal and the game turned to a dramatic shootout in front of the Stretford end.
The penalty shot began with Fernandes sending Leno calmly the wrong way to give United Leadership. Raul Jiménez responded in kind by Fulham, before Dalot and Sander Berge turned their respective strokes to make 2-2.
Casemiro restored United’s advantage, just for Willian to score the scores again. Viktor Lindelof then saw his efforts saved by Leno, giving Fulham the opportunity to seize the control. Antonee Robinson maintained its composition to roll the ball in the center, putting Fulham 4-3 ahead.
With the hopes of the United FA CUP on the line, Zirkzee increased, but saw its penalty saved by Leno, causing wild celebrations between players and Fulham fans.
