Sci-Fi’s calling is a genre making a wide range of stories that fit under the heading that houses stories ranging from Star Wars fantasy, to philosophical bending Arrivalor camp Ice -tights. There is one show though, which created so many ropes sci-fi stories depending on them, which can be considered the subject of the genre’s text and responsible alone for generations of fans who use shorthand to describe plots and characters. The twilight zonediscovered in 1959, one of the most influential shows ever, and even today, nearly 70 years later, no show has come close to matching the standard set by the Black and Gwyn series.

Rod Serling, the host of each episode, was also a creator The twilight zone. After Serling’s presentation, viewers are dropped into the world of the chapter, usually in the middle of the story, and typically, there is a last time in the closing moments that re -draw the entire episode. “Five characters to look for an exit” from season 3 is a great example, as five characters, clown, ballerina, hobo, large army, and bag pipe player, are stuck in one location for the entire episode, but the way Serling could write a dialogue makes the last twist hit with more weight than you would expect from the thin episode.
The twilight zone full of episodes that have become staples of pop culture, and that was before they were prepared on The Simpsons. “Nightmare is 20,000 feet,” contains William Shatner People who have never seen the original know to be disturbed by Gremlin during flight. “Time Enough of Last” tells the story of Henry Bemis that he wants nothing more than sitting and reading his books, with a final turn that has become an iconic moment, and morally locked still relevant today.

For The twilight zone A critical success and today it is considered a classic, the series had to challenge cancellation several times, and even change formats, from 30 -minute chapters to 60 minutes in season 4, then back down to 30 for the fifth, and last, season. Years after Serling’s passing in 1975, the series was revived for The Twilight Zone: The Moviewhich included updated Reimagingins from classic episodes directed by Steven Speilberg (“Kick the Can”), Joe Dante (“it’s a good life”), George Miller (“Nightmare is 20,000 feet”), and an original segment, directed by John Landis. The film’s success to the re-launch of the CBS franchise in 1985, led to strong scales at first, but soon, thanks in part to corporate thinking behind the scenes, the show fell apart.

The third attempt to capture Rod Serling was less successful, broadcast on UPN and hosted by Forrest Whitaker, updated classical episodes with guest stars that include Bill Mumy and Cloris Leachman revenge on their roles “It is still a good life,” followed a long list of stars and proced Michael ShanksWallace Langham, James Remar, Hill Harper, Robin Tunney, and Amber Tamblyn, among many, many others. Although considered a cult classic today, the Whitaker version continued only one season.

Jordan Peele was the latest, in 2019, to try to come back The twilight zoneBut even his chapters failed to meet the high bar set by original 1959. Each revival is still at least a good series, but compared to the show that has defined an anthology and still hand -custom for dozens of sci-fi Episodes every year, it is easy to reach. And yet, the first episode, “The Comedian” with Kumail Nanjinai starring, hits all the story beats of a classic original series about stand-up who realizes that he has the power to dry people of existence with his jokes.
The twilight zone Having suffered for decades thanks to its simple, yet effective preset to use sci-fi traps mixed with horror, fantasy, drama, and sometimes even comedy, without the need for flashy special effects or associated universe. Good storytelling, sharp dialogue, and twist limits that swell the plot and do not exist to amaze the audience is an everlasting pillars of great stories, but modern writers tend to throw them aside for large sets. The original is in black and white, and nearly 70, but it’s a classic for a reason, and if you watch the series today, you’ll find how much of your favorite shows are debt to the creative genius of Rod Serling.
