Gary Antuanne Russell (18-1, 17 kos) looked like pure gold on Saturday night, beating the WBA Light Welterweight champion, Jose ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela (14-3, 9 kos), winning an amazing 12-round decision unanimous in his co-carcass battle in the center of Brooklyn Barclays, New York.
The mandatory challenger Russell had no respect for the champion, the power of Rayo Valenzuela, and pressed him all night, landing punches on his head and body. The speed of Gary Antuanne’s hand and the advantage of the fist power was an important factor because it allowed him to shoot each time Rayo tried to launch.
The scores
119-109
119-109
120-108
The ninth round answered Valenzuela’s eyes and seemed mentally defeated. However, he continued to fight, taking Russell with great shots in the rounds of the championship. Russell was reckless with his attacks on the 11th and 12th, hiking in punches they would have turned on a house.
In the last 30 seconds of the 12th, Valenzuela caught Gary Antuanne with a right hand that sent his mouth. He continued to hammer with powerful hands right until the final bell. I don’t know how Russell remained standing.
