“They have just kept calm”: the slot greets the players, as the Liverpool extends to the lead at the Premier League summit

Arne Slot greeted the calm that his players have shown after what we called “mental challenges”, as Liverpool extended the lead to the top of the Premier League at 13 points with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle in Anfield.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister’s goals won the Slot team against a Newcastle side that fought in the absence of striker Alexander Isak.

Arsenal’s apartment against Nottingham Forest meant that the Reds extended leadership to the table by two points with ten remaining games.

Liverpool’s chief saw the game from the stands while serving the first of the ban on two tactile games after receiving a red card in the full-time whistle at 2-2 tie with Everton.

And while seeing areas of improvement, Slot was pleased with his players.

“It was maybe because it was our fifth game in 15 days, I saw a few times fighting a little with the ball,” the slot admitted.

“But the players’ work rate after so many games was incredible. Not only of those who started, but of those who entered.

“So, again, it was not only a very good performance of the team, but a very good performance of the squad.”

The Dutch manager also wanted to emphasize how he believes that his players have managed the growing pressure of being leaders of the league for so long.

“After Everton, after the game of Villa and The Wolves, people began to doubt some things about our game,” said Slot. “But we reacted so well against the city and suddenly everyone was so positive again.

“For all the mental challenges we have, the players only calm down and did the things they have to do and this is what is as hard as possible for the other team to play against us.

“Most of the time our quality makes the difference.”

Liverpool’s head refused to talk about talking about the title, insisting that there is “a long way to go” and that his team “does not focus on the long term.”

But Slot rushed to praise Szoboszlai’s work, adding that the Hungarian “runs for two players.”

“This deserves even more credit than scoring a goal. But it is good to start scoring goals because in the end this is what you have to do as an attacking midfielder who carries the Liverpool shirt.”
