Promoter Oscar De La Hoya will pick Tyson Fury to avenge his loss to WBA, WBC and WBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk tonight live on DAZNpredicting a knockout victory for the Gypsy King in Riyadh.
De La Hoya says he sees something in Fury’s (34-1-1, 24 KOs) eyes that makes him think he’s going to win. He feels Fury, 36, wasn’t there mentally in his 12-round split decision loss to Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) earlier this year on May 18.
Can Fury avenge his loss?
Oscar thinks former WBC heavyweight champion Fury’s 55-pound edge and power will be too much for the 226-pound Usyk, who began his career at cruiserweight.
Fury weighed 281 pounds at Friday’s weigh-in. Even though Fury’s weight is likely five to six pounds lighter because he’s in a leather jacket, he’ll still outweigh Usyk by more than 40 pounds tonight.
One area De La Hoya didn’t mention was Fury’s fragile punch resistance. Usyk was hurt in the ninth round, landing 20 straight blows to the head before being saved by the well-intentioned referee, who gave him a strange count of eight.
That was only seven months ago, and not enough time for Fury’s head to recover from what he suffered in that round. If Usyk hits Fury on the chin, he can go as before. There will be no such ref to save him this time with another handy eight count.
“I love Tyson Fury. I see something in his eyes. I see something in his spirit, and I just think that the first fight they had, I don’t think Tyson was here (mentally there),” said Oscar De La Hoya to the Fighthype. Youtube channel, discussing the first match between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk on May 18.
“This time, I see him focused, I see him determined and I could see him eliminating Usyk,” continued De La Hoya. “I think it’s a good thing. A 50-pound difference is a huge advantage,” Oscar said of Fury outscoring Usyk by 55 pounds at the weigh-in.
“I think if Tyson lands the perfect punch, Usyk will go down and I love Usyk. He’s the best boxer and heavyweight in a while. I think Tyson’s reach and IQ in the ring might overwhelm Usyk this time “.
Fury will need Usyk immobile to finish him if he hurts him with a shot, because he doesn’t have the punching power to get the knockout.
“I’m going with Fury,” said Amir Khan. “He’ll be more than ready because Fury has that natural talent. He’s technically more talented and bigger than them. I got Fury to win this fight because he’s bigger and stronger. He’ll learn from the mistakes he made in the first fight. The unique thing about Fury is that it adapts pretty quickly.
“In the fights against Wilder in the first and second, he adapted a lot going into the third fight. That’s the one thing about Fury. He’s one of those fighters who’s always adapting and improving. He’s always learning from his mistakes and becomes a better fighter,” Khan said.
