With the It Ends With Us still unsolved movie mess, possible film sequel on the horizon for Colleen Hoover supporters.
Justin Baldoni has the rights to Hoover It Starts With Us — the 2022 sequel to his 2016 novel It Ends With Us – but it seems the actor may not be on board to direct a second film in this movie universe.
“I think there are better people for that one,” he told sight360 Entertainment Tonight on August 6, 2024, when asked about the possibility of stepping behind the camera for a sequel. “I think Blake Lively ready to direct. That’s what I think.”
His comment made fans wonder if there was bad blood between Baldoni and Lively on set. Us Weekly has since confirmed that there is intense “creative struggle”. between the two. “(Justin) was made to feel like his vision wasn’t as important as Blake’s, and that stifled the creativity on set,” a source told Us just earlier this month. (Baldoni directed and starred as Ryle Kincaid in the film while Lively executive produced the film and starred as Lily Bloom.)
TMZ reported in December 2024 that Baldoni sued vigorously for sexual harassment, claiming his behavior during filming caused “severe emotional distress.” His lawyer, Bryan Freedmanhe said in a statement to Us Weekly that the allegations are “absolutely false, outrageous and deliberately salacious,” arguing that Lively is trying to “fix her negative reputation.” Us reached out to Lively’s rep for comment at the time.
It Ends With Us tells the story of flower shop owner Lily who finds herself in an abusive relationship with Ryle, a neurosurgeon with a dark past. When the homeless man from Lily’s youth, named Atlas (Brandon Sklenar), reappears, it further throws a wrench in her relationship with Ryle.
The second book is a continuation of Lily’s story – but this time with Atlas.

Both the film and the book end with Lily giving birth to her and Ryle’s daughter, Emerson, and asking him for a divorce. In a flash forward leading up to the sequel, Lily meets Atlas.
The second book takes place almost a year after It Ends With Us‘ a conclusion. Lily is now a mother to a 1-year-old daughter and is trying to figure out a co-parenting relationship with Ryle. Eventually, she and Atlas reconnect romantically.
Baldoni’s Wayfarer Studios owns the rights to the second book.
“We have the option on him,” Baldoni said Variety in July 2024: “I haven’t even started thinking that far ahead. I try to stay in the present as much as I can.”
Screenwriter Christy Hall Coy played during an August 2024 interview with Business Insider.
“Everybody wants to be in business with Colleen so I’d be interested to know who currently controls the rights to all her material because I’d be shocked if she hasn’t been laid all over and all over town,” Hall said, noting that he would “happily adjust” anything with Hoover.
Baldoni made it clear that he has no plans to direct a potential sequel — or pull double duty just yet.
“We’re going to take a vacation after this,” he told sight360 ET earlier this month.
Baldoni is set to active product Scarlett Johanssondirectorial debut, Eleanor the Great, Black Is Beautiful: The Story of Kwame Brathwaite a Code 3.
