Indiana Attorney General Sues Sheriff for Challenging Illegal Immigration

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rocita announced Friday that his office is suing the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department illegal immigration.

“I have filed a lawsuit against St. Joseph County Sheriff (William) Redman and his department for their ongoing practice of refusing to cooperate with federal immigration authorities,” Roquito told reporters at a news conference in South Bend, Indiana.

He continued, “This includes the failure to properly notify ICE of the release of illegal aliens, and the failure to honor ICE detainees. This deliberate decision not to cooperate with federal immigration authorities provides safe harbor to criminal aliens who need to be removed from our country. and this county.”

ICE detainers refer to people whom ICE asks local authorities to hold until an agent takes them into custody.

He said the sheriff’s actions will lead to more undocumented immigrants in the country coming to St. Joseph County and committing crimes.

“I refuse, as your attorney general, to just stand by and watch the lawlessness that happens on the part of law enforcement agencies,” he added.

Rokita said the sheriff’s department is still out of compliance with Indiana law after multiple attempts to contact the sheriff.

He noted that despite the lawsuit, Indiana will continue to support its law enforcement agencies, “but we will also prosecute those who deserve to be prosecuted.”

“My office will not stop working here on this issue until the laws are enforced and we put our people first before illegals,” he said.

Rokita said his office would be “happy to drop the lawsuit” if the sheriff’s department cooperates.

He added that his office is also investigating possible job tracking networks in the state amid reports from residents of an influx of migrants into communities.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Redman and the St. Joseph Sheriff’s Department for comment.

The claim comes as President Trump unveiled his mass deportation plan, and the White House said hundreds of migrants who are in the country illegally have been removed since he was sworn in on Monday.
