“The song I’m most proud of is ‘Independence Day,'” McBride, 58, reveals exclusively in her 25 Things You Don’t Know About Me feature in the latest edition of Us Weeklyon newsstands now. “I’ve received so many letters and heard so many personal stories about how that song affected people and changed lives.”

Released in 1994 as the third single from her album The Way I Am“Independence Day” is now considered McBride’s signature song. The lyrics tell the story from the point of view of a young woman whose mother suffers domestic abuse from her husband, and she finally regains her independence—on Independence Day—by arson.

“Well she lit up the sky on the fourth of July,” McBride sings in the third verse. “By the time the firemen came / They put out the flames and took some names down / And sent me to the county home / Now, I’m not saying it’s right or wrong / But maybe that’s the only way / Talk about your revolution / It’s Independence Day.”
