With War to infinity and Endgame firmly in the rearview mirror, there is now a kind of expectation established of what the race to a again Avengers movie it will be like: especially so Super Smash Bros. Ultimate “Everybody’s here!” meme, but with superhero actors. So far, Doomsday proved to be no exception to this, collection elder Avengers stars thought done with the MCU like them last batch of infinite stones. But there were only exceptions so far.
That comes mainly thanks to Benedict Cumberbatch, who confirmed today in a new profile with Variety what you do Doctor Strange will not put on his magic cloak for Avengers: Doomsday next year “Is that a spoiler,” the actor wondered, before immediately adding “Fuck it!”
According to Cumberbatch, Strange originally made it into the movie while he was still Kang dynastybut the radical revision of Marvel’s plans to come after the studio cut ties with actor Jonathan Majors after he was charged with reckless assault at the end of 2023 things changed. And fear not, Sorcerer Supreme fans: as Strange jumps out Doomsdayhas a major role in the follow-up film Secret Warswith Cumberbatch adding that “”It’s pretty central to where things could go.”
That might not be the end of it his time in the MCU either “They’re very open to discussing where we go next,” Cumberbatch teased. “‘Who do you want to write and direct the next one? What part of the comic lore do you want to explore so that Strange can continue to evolve? He’s a very rich character to play. He’s a complex, contradictory, troubled human who has these extraordinary abilities, so there are powerful things to joke about.
He understands that Avengers: Doomsday It won’t have everyone in it, of course — at this point in the MCU’s life, that kind of thing is impractical. But it is is it interesting to see how much Marvel’s plans have been changed by Kang’s removal from the process. Time will tell who will still be sitting out Doomsday as we get closer to its May 2026 release date.
