In a much-awaited return to first-class cricket after a decade, Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharmais with Bombay in the Ranji Trophy unfortunately it was cut short. Rohit, who has been struggling with form in Test cricket for the past few months, was dismissed for just 2 runs off 19 balls against Jammu and Kashmir at the Wankhede Stadium on 23 January 2025.

Rohit had joined the Mumbai training camp with the aim of rediscovering his form, especially after his recent challenges in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 where he managed just 31 runs in five innings. His involvement was part of a wider strategy to ensure that experienced players commit to domestic cricket, a move endorsed by India’s head coach. Gautam Gambhirwho emphasized the importance of Test players playing first-class cricket.

Rohit’s return to the domestic fold ends in a cheap dismissal

Rohit was seen walking on the field with determination, dressed in the traditional white Mumbai cricket attire. The score at the time of his dismissal showed Mumbai at 12/1, with Rohit coming into bat after the fall of an early wicket.

Facing the bowler Umar Nazir MirRohit tried to play a defensive shot but an edge of his bat found its way to the slips where he was caught by Stop Dograending his brief return to the Ranji Trophy. The dismissal was a classic example of how a single mistake can alter the course of a batsman’s innings, especially in the tough conditions of domestic cricket.

Hopes of a strong comeback were dashed in the Ranji Trophy clash

The match against Jammu and Kashmir was an important one as it was part of the second phase of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy, with Mumbai preparing for their sixth round. Rohit’s eagerness to train with the Mumbai team under head coach Omkar Salvi had raised hopes among fans and cricket pundits that this could be the platform for the captain to regain his touch in longest format cricket. However, the result was far from what was expected.
