Jos Buttler addresses calls to boycott Afghanistan’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match

The Taliban’s Impact on Afghanistan Cricket

Since the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan in 2021, the regime has enforced laws that effectively ban women from participating in sports or public life. These actions have elicited widespread condemnation from international organizations, including the International Cricket Council (ICC). The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has come under scrutiny for her non-compliance with ICC regulations requiring the inclusion of women in cricket development programmes. As a result, the Afghanistan national team’s participation in global tournaments such as the Champions Trophy has become a hotly debated topic.

Jos Buttler’s response to the boycott call

Given the ongoing political pressure, the England captain, Yes Butlerhas expressed his position on the matter. Speaking bluntly, Buttler acknowledged the complexity of the situation but stressed that as a player, he tries to stay informed about political situations but relies on experts for more knowledge. He has been in communication with the ECB’s general director of men Rob Key and others at the ECB to understand their perspective, and believes that a boycott is not the right approach.

“Political situations like this, as a player you’re trying to be as informed as you can,” Buttler said. “The pundits know a lot more, so I’ve been trying to stay in dialogue with Rob Key and the guys up there to see how they see it I don’t think a boycott is the way to do it,Buttler told the reporter earlier T20I vs India.

The players focused on the game, not politics

Buttler mentioned that the players have not worried too much about political issues and have focused on educating themselves. He has read useful materials and consulted experts for their opinions. He stressed that players do not want politics to affect sports and expressed hope for a successful Champions Trophy tournament.

“The players haven’t worried too much about it. You are trying to educate yourself and read about these things. There have been some good things written about this which I have taken advantage of and spoken to quite a few people to try and gather expert opinion. As a player, you don’t want political situations to affect the sport. We hope to go to the Champions Trophy and play this game and have a very good tournament”, he added.
