Snow squalls are rare in the southern United States – now a blizzard has started

A rare winter storm is bringing snow and freezing rain to parts of the US Deep South, closing highways and airports and prompting the first-ever blizzard warning for southwest Louisiana.

The video shows nuns and a priest playing snowballs in Matera, Louisiana, while a skier drags himself down a street in Charleston, South Carolina.

Four people are believed to have died from exposure to the cold, with two cases being investigated by authorities in Austin, Texas as cold-related, while two deaths from hypothermia were reported in Georgia and Milwaukee.

The extreme weather is part of a very cold air mass that has descended on the southern and eastern United States.
