Champions Trophy 2025: Suryakumar Yadav responds to his exclusion from the Indian squad

In a candid admission, Suryakumar Yadavthe captain of India’s T20I team, has responded to his exclusion from the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025acknowledging that his underwhelming performances in One Day Internationals (ODIs) were the main reason for his omission.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the first T20I against England on Wednesday (January 22), Suryakumar expressed both disappointment and acceptance with the selectors’ decision.

During the press conference, Suryakumar reflected on his ODI career, which has seen him score 773 runs in 37 matches at an average of just 25.76. Despite being a formidable force in T20I cricket, where he boasts a strike rate of 167.86, his transition to the 50-over format has been a challenge.

“It hurts me to think that I have not done well. If I had done well, I would have stayed there.” he affirmed, emphasizing his recognition of the reason of the voters. When asked if he was hurt by the non-selection, Suryakumar replied: “Why would it hurt? If I did well, I would have been in the Champions Trophy. If I don’t do well, it’s important to accept that.” His comments reflect a mature understanding of performance-based selections in professional sports.

Suryakumar also expressed his support for those who were picked for the Champions Trophy squad, stressing that they deserve their places based on their performances in ODIs and domestic cricket. “The squad looks very good. Whoever is there, they are all good performers. They have done relatively well in this format for India.” he added. Despite his exclusion from the Champions Trophy squad and the upcoming ODI series against England, Suryakumar remains focused on leading India in the T20I format. He is set to captain the team in a five-match T20I series against England starting at Eden Gardens on January 22.
