When it comes to anchoring a morning news show, one thing is certain – your wake-up call is long before the sun rises.

And as a result, Savannah Guthrie gets a stern warning about his new Today conger Craig Melvin.

Before joining Today six years ago, he was evening news anchor for WIS in Columbia, South Carolina, and weekend anchor for WRC in Washington, DC in 2008, where he met his wife, a sports reporter Lindsay Czarniak.

The husband and wife share a love of sport that is independent of each other.

As a result, Melvin admitted that he stayed up last night to watch the College National Championship instead of going to bed to prepare for his 3:45am call time.

Guthrie was quick to reproach Melvin for his choices.

“I was up late last night,” Melvin told Guthrie on Tuesday, January 21, revealing that he “had to see if the Ohio State Buckeyes could defeat their opponents” the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who they 34- 23.

“Again? You know this is a marathon, not a sprint. If you stay up every night watching football and get up early, this can’t last,” warned Guthrie Melvin.

Melvin agreed with his bully, admitting that he was “going to have to heal myself.”

Melvin has been anchoring the first hour of the Today show since January 13. However, it has been a staple during the third hour of the show for the past few years.

In an interview with ParadeMelvin recalled how he learned about it Hoda Kotbdecision to step away from the anchor desk in order to spend more time with her daughters and her mother.

“My changing room is two over from her, and she knocked on my door one morning, which was unusual. And she’s like, ‘You got a second?’ He came in and said, ‘I wanted to tell you something. I’m leaving.’”

Hoda Kotb celebrates her new chapter after her final appearance on the Today show. The 60-year-old broadcaster took to social media on Monday, January 13, with a positive message about starting over. “And suddenly, you know… it’s time to start something new and trust in the magic of new beginnings,” read a quote he shared through (…)

Admitting that “nobody leaves these jobs alone,” he said he first questioned whether Kotb was “sick.” When she assured him that she was fine and that she wanted to quit her job while she was “on top,” Melvin pressed harder.

“I was like, ‘Are they forcing you out?’ She’s like, ‘No Craig, I’m fine. I’m leaving.’ I was legit shocked, so much so after she left, I went back to her dressing room, and I was like, ‘Are you sure you’re okay?’ It takes a certain kind of courage to leave anything when you’re at the top of your game.”
