The grave of beloved Sci-Fi author Octavia Butler survived the Los Angeles fire

In Parable of the Sower, a fire-ravaged California hard a climate change future that is now reality. In 1993 the classic of speculative fiction, American science fiction author Octavia E. Butlerwho lived in nearby Altadena, predicted the catastrophic fires of Los Angeles.

The Afrofuturist’s grave is located in Altadena, which has been hit hard amid recent wildfires that have left thousands of Californians homeless. But his funeral has survived: the AP shared an image of the scene and said it received “minimal damage,” citing a statement on the Altadena Mountain View Cemetery website. Butler passed in 2006 and his foot reads “Everything you touch, you change. Everything you change, you change,” a quote from Parable of the Sower.

Altadena, what CBS News described as “a historically Black community,” it is now working to rebuild. Octavia’s shelfa Pasadena bookstore named for the inspirational author, is a hub of activity that works tirelessly to support Butler’s beloved Los Angeles enclave.
