Former Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi was hospitalized after suffering an injury during an official trip to Luxembourg, her office said Friday.
US media reported that Pelosi broke her hip after tripping and falling on the stairs during the event, citing sources who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.
Pelosi, 84, “is currently receiving excellent treatment from her doctors and health care providers,” spokesman Ian Kreger said in a statement.
The Democrat, who represents California in the US House of Representatives, was traveling with a bipartisan congressional delegation to Luxembourg to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.
Crager said Pelosi is “looking forward to returning home to the United States soon” and continues to work at the hospital.
The congresswoman from San Francisco has been a prominent figure in US politics for seven presidential administrations.
She first served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011, a powerful position second in line to the presidency after the vice president, before resuming the job in 2019 after her party regained control of the chamber.
She stepped down in 2023 after serving two separate four-year terms in the post. But she continued to serve in the Chamber. Last month, she was elected to another two-year term.
Pelosi joined 17 other members of the House of Representatives on a bipartisan trip to Luxembourg, according to House Speaker Mike Johnson’s office. It is planned that the delegation will take part in the jubilee events together with veterans, their families, and military personnel.
Pelosi will not be able to participate in any further events, her spokesperson said.
Her injury comes just days after outgoing Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky, suffered a sprained wrist and facial cuts after a fall at the US Capitol.
