The Cowboys have the longest NFC championship game drought since the Commanders’ flash streak

The Dallas Cowboys were on the minds of NFL fans Saturday, even as the team failed to make the playoffs and began the offseason by parting ways with head coach Mike McCarthy.

Washington Commanders win over Detroit Lions marked the end of their long NFC championship drought. The team will be vying for a chance to reach the Super Bowl for the first time since the 1991 season. Washington has only made the playoffs seven times since that game.

The Cowboys are currently on the NFC’s longest championship drought. Dallas has not been to the conference title game since the 1995 season. In that game, the team beat the Green Bay Packers and then topped the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl. It was the last time the Cowboys appeared in the Super Bowl.

Since then, the Cowboys have made the playoffs 18 times. Neither performance resulted in a division win.

FOX Sports noted that Tom Brady and the New England Patriots won six Super Bowl titles, and the quarterback added another with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The New York Jets have played for back-to-back AFC titles, but have not played in the postseason since 2010. The New York Giants have won two Super Bowls, the Philadelphia Eagles have won a Super Bowl, and Commanders quarterback Jaden Daniels has as many playoff wins as Dak Prescott.

The Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins have longer conference title game droughts.

The Browns have not appeared in the AFC Championship since the 1989 season, when they lost to John Elway and the Denver Broncos. The Dolphins have not appeared in the conference title game since the 1992 season. Miami lost that year to the Buffalo Bills.
