China executed two men for the deadly attacks in the same week


China has executed two men responsible for two deadly attacks within a week last November.

Fan Weiqiu, 62, killed at least 35 people and injured dozens more after ran his car over people who were playing sports outside a stadium in Zhuhai, in what is believed to be the deadliest attack on Chinese soil in a decade.

A few days later, 21-year-old Xu Jiajin killed eight people and injured 17 others. stabbings at his university in the city of Usi in the east of the country.

Authorities said Fang was driven by “dissatisfaction” with how his property was divided after a divorce, while Xu carried out the attack after “failing to graduate due to poor exam results.”

Phan was arrested at the scene on November 11, where he was found with self-inflicted wounds.

In December, he was found guilty of “endangering public safety”, with the court describing his motives as “extremely vile” and the “methods used” as “particularly cruel”.

His execution on Monday came less than a month after a court sentenced him to death.

In Xu’s case, police said he confessed to the crime “without hesitation” on November 16. On December 17, he was sentenced to death, and the court found the circumstances of his crime to be “particularly serious” and “extremely serious”.

China has recently been grappling with a wave of communal violence, and many of the attackers are believed to have been motivated by desire “revenge on society” – where criminals target strangers because of their personal grievances.

The number of such attacks in China in 2024 reached 19.

Days after the attacks in Zhuhai and Wuxi, a man drove into a crowd of children and parents outside an elementary school in the city of Changde, injuring 30 of them.

Authorities said the man, Huang Wen, wanted to vent his anger after dealing with investment losses and family conflict.

Juan was suspended death sentence last month – which could be commuted to life in prison if he does not commit another crime in the next two years.
