Trump promises a blizzard of orders on the first day of the presidency

Watch: Trump promises ‘brand new day’ at pre-inauguration rally

Hours before he is to be sworn in, Donald Trump promised to sign a slew of executive orders on his first day in office as he celebrated his victory at a rally.

Trump addressed a crowd of thousands of supporters in Washington ahead of his inauguration, offering a preview of the next four years and celebrating his election victory over Democrats.

The Republican has vowed to act unilaterally on a wide range of issues, using his new presidential powers to launch deportation operations and scale back environmental regulations.

“I will act with historic speed and force and resolve every crisis facing our country,” he promised the crowd.

“You’re going to have a lot of fun watching television tomorrow,” he told those in attendance at the Make America Great Again victory rally. “Every radical and stupid executive order of the Biden administration will be overturned within hours of me taking the oath of office.”

Trump has promised executive orders that would increase artificial intelligence, create a Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE), make available records related to the assassinations of former presidents, direct the military to build an Iron Dome missile defense shield, and eliminate the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) policy from the military.

The media reported that Trump could issue more than 200 executive orders on Monday, which is different from an executive order.

Executive orders are recognized by the courts, are binding, and are published in the Federal Register. They can be canceled by future presidents.

Executive actions, however, carry less weight and are not subject to legal review. They serve more as a “wish list” of policies the president hopes to implement, writes political writer Tom Mears.

“You will see orders that will make you extremely happy,” he told the crowd. “We have to set our country on the right course.”

Many of these orders are expected to be challenged in court.

Trump has also promised to sign executive orders that will crack down on illegal immigration at the border, launching what he claims is the largest deportation operation in history.

Experts say Trump’s pledge to deport millions of migrants will face huge setbacks logistical obstaclesand potentially cost tens or hundreds of billions of dollars.

Trump has also promised to crack down on crime in American cities, eliminate left-wing politics in government and welcome trans people into American sports.

In his speech at the rally, he took credit for the revival of TikTok after it was briefly banned over the weekend and for the Middle East ceasefire agreement.

The cease-fire agreement was signed a few days ago under the Biden administration.

The rally was held at the Capital One Arena in downtown Washington, D.C., which holds about 20,000 people.

It began with a performance by Kid Rock and included speeches by TV host Megyn Kelly, actor Jon Voight and senior Trump adviser Stephen Miller.

Elon Musk also gave a brief speech after Mr. Trump touted the creation of DOGE, a consulting agency to be called the Department of Government Efficiency that Mr. Musk is set to lead with Vivek Ramaswamy.

The Trump family also joined him on stage, including Donald Trump Jr., Eric and Lara Trump.

Trump supporters — wearing red Make America Great Again hats and other pro-Trump gear — flooded the nation’s capital this weekend, despite freezing temperatures and snow on Sunday.

Bad weather caused the inauguration ceremony to be postponed, making it a less public event with limited access.

On Monday morning, Trump will take the oath of office in the rotunda of the US Capitol.
