The men of Amorim won again for the seagulls

Brighton continued their dominance of Manchester United with a deserved win at Old Trafford this afternoon.

On a day when United honored the memory of the great Denis Law, who died on Friday, the Seagulls ran out worthy winners as Ruben Amorim’s concerns continued with another lackluster display from his side.

Yankuba Minteh put Brighton ahead and, although Bruno Fernandes equalized from the penalty spot, Kauro Mitoma and Georginio Rutter added second-half goals for Fabian Hurzeler’s side.

Shambolic Onana symbol of United’s problems

Rutter’s goal came after a terrible error from United goalkeeper Andre Onana and summed up the hosts’ misery as they lost against Brighton for the eighth time in 16 Premier League games.

United went into the game with plenty of momentum after Amad Diallo’s late hat-trick saw them defeat Southampton on Thursday night, but the atmosphere fell flat early on when Mitoma burst past Noussair Mazraoui and crossed to Minteh to touch.

Fernandes had already come close to equalizing with a shot that went wide before the Portugal international equalized from the spot.

A loose pass from Brighton keeper Bart Verbruggen was intercepted by Diallo, who played it into the recalled Joshua Zirkzee only for the Dutchman to be dragged down by Carlos Baleba.

Fernandes sent Verbruggen the wrong way from 12 yards, rolling it into the bottom left corner.

Brighton were mostly playing on the counter, but it was an approach that paid dividends and they almost regained their lead shortly before the break.

Minteh picked out Dany Welbeck inside the box but the former United striker was denied a goal on his return to Old Trafford by a brilliant tackle from defender Diogo Dalot.

Effort ruled out by VAR

Brighton thought they had scored again eight minutes after the restart, Joao Pedro firing over after United failed to deflect Yasin Ayari’s free-kick only for the goal to be awarded by VAR after a foul on Dalot de Jan Paul van Hecke.

They were not to be refused at the time, however.

Minteh played the ball to the far post and Mitoma did enough to avoid Mazraoui’s attack and collect the ball.

United went in search of another equalizer but Zirkzee’s shot, following a run by Diallo, was blocked by Van Hecke.

It was a crucial moment as Brighton quickly went down the other end and ended the game with a third goal.

Onana thought he had cleared the danger by stepping out to collect Ayari’s cross but, having initially claimed it, he let the ball go and Rutter had the simple task of firing into the empty net.

Amorim threw on Antony, who is set to end his miserable spell at United with a loan move to Real Betis, and Rasmus Hojlund and brought United’s attacking play back to life.

Diallo forced Verbruggen into a low save before fellow substitute Alejandro Garnacho fired wide when well placed.

However, their efforts came to naught as Brighton held on relatively easily to hand United a fourth defeat in seven games in all competitions.

The Seagulls are up to ninth, just four points off the Champions League places, with United in 13th.
