India’s national cricket team squad for ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has been announced.Chief selector Ajit Agarkar and captain Rohit Sharma made the announcement on Saturday (January 18) through the press conference in Mumbai.
The press conference was scheduled to take place at 12:30 PM IST, but was delayed by about 2.5 hours. This was because Rohit Sharma, Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir were involved in a meeting that was very long and kept many waiting.
However, the reason for the delay has been revealed. According to Dainik Jagran reports, it is learned that the discussion about the vice-captain of the team for ICC Champions Trophy 2025 was the main reason. The talks were related to who should be Rohit Sharma’s deputy, Shubman Gill or Hardik Pandya.
Reports claimed that there was a pick conflict between Rohit, Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir. The Indian national cricket team skipper and selector wanted Shubman Gill to be the vice-captain, while the head coach backed all-rounder Hardik Pandya to take over the role.
Ajit Agarkar and Rohit Sharma were firm on making Shubman Gill the vice-captain for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
Ajit Agarkar and Rohit were adamant about Shubman Gill and thus Gautam Gambhir’s call was ignored. This was confirmed to Dainik Jagran by a source close to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Shubman Gill being named vice-captain came as no surprise as the youngster was named vice-captain during the Sri Lanka tour. After captaining the team in the T20I series against the Zimbabwe national cricket team, he became part of the leadership group.
Ajit Agarkar, while talking about the decision to make Shubman Gill the vice-captain, said that they are always looking to the future. He also said dressing room feedback was taken into account before making the call to make the young vice-captain.
Shubman Gill has undoubtedly developed as one of the best openers for the team, working with Rohit Sharma will be helpful for the youngster.
