This weekend, Japanese audiences get to watch the hot new one Mobile Suit Gundam series, GQuuuuuuXin the theaters. Fortunately, North American audiences will still have the opportunity to see the upcoming anime on the big screen, too – we’ll just have to wait a little longer before we can.
On Friday, film distributor Gkids revealed that it has picked up the theatrical rights for the Mobile Suit Gundam: GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- movie It will hit theaters here on February 28th and will run for … it’s not clear at the moment, nor is it clear if the screenings will only have Japanese audio (as in when Dan Da Dan hit theaters last year), or include an English dub. While the larger franchise is no stranger to theatrical films and compilations, this is a first Gundam shows since recognized in G to have its first three episodes arrive in theaters, and the first show in the franchise period to arrive in North American locations.

GQuuuuuuX comes with a lot of creative talent behind it Neon Genesis Evangelion alumni Kazuya Tsurumaki and Yoji Enokido, plus the creator of that franchise, Hideaki Anno. In a statement, Gkids president David Jesteadt highlighted the creative pedigree of the mecha series, calling it “an outrageous combination of artistic talent collaborating on a series as rich in history as Mobile Suit Gundam is the display of the appointment. We are proud to play a role in bringing such an exciting new project to audiences in the cinematic experience that the film truly deserves.”
While we wait Mobile Suit Gundam: GQuuuuuuX’s theatrical cut on February 28 (and the current show to arrive sometime this year), it might not hurt to take the show in the continuity of the Universal Century, since it seems that it can be important. Alternatively, Mubi has little later After the Gundam X War, and that sounds pretty good in its own right.
