At least 30 people were injured when the elevator collapsed

At least 30 people are reported to have been injured, 17 of them seriously, after a lift collapsed in northern Spain.

The resort of Astun in the Spanish Pyrenees, where the incident happened, is closed, and rescue services are on the scene.

Images and videos circulating on social media show several people lying on the snow under the lift.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he was “shocked” by news of the incident.

Ambulances and helicopters are transporting the wounded to nearby hospitals.

One of the Spanish public broadcasters reports that dozens of people remain hanging from the 15-meter high chairlift awaiting rescue.

An eyewitness told local media that it looked like the cable had snapped, the chairs had jumped, and people had been thrown from the elevator.

The cause of the cable break is still unknown.

Images on social media appear to show one of the spoked lifter flywheels.

A video released by Spain’s Civil Guard shows the helicopter flying past the scene before landing to allow emergency workers to disembark.
