The Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL) will debut with three teams in February

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is all set to launch the first ever Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL) right after the conclusion of the ongoing Men’s BPL.

The inaugural edition of the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL) will be held from February 8 to 15, and the tournament will feature three teams. Each team will face the other twice in six league games before the final showdown.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) women’s wing president Nazmul Abedin confirmed the launch of WBPL next month and said they are ready to start the league with three teams this year. Earlier, the BCB considered four teams for the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League, but they felt that a three-team competition would be more competitive.

Nazmul Abedin was quoted by Cricbuzz: “The plan is to run it (WBPL) with three teams. To organize a quality tournament, you need a sufficient pool of talented players. Expanding beyond three teams would dilute the quality. All and that we considered four teams, we decided that this format was more feasible”.

Abedin stressed that the Bangladesh Cricket Board is not hosting the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League just for financial reasons, but they aim to raise the level of women’s cricket in the country through this exciting competition.

The BCB president further noted, “Our focus is not just to organize a tournament for financial gain but to improve the level of women’s cricket. A three-team competition will be more competitive. It will take place soon after the end of the Men’s BPL, lasting eight to nine days. Discussions with the franchises have already taken place and they are keen to participate.”

Meanwhile, the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League will debut with a unique team composition that only allows one foreign player in each playing XI. Each of the three participating teams will be required to pick 15 local players, with the foreign player quota open to bring an international touch to the WBPL.

Financial problems will not affect BPL women: Nazmul Abedin

On the other hand, Nazmul Abedin, who is also the member secretary of the governing council of BPL, has insisted that there would be no wage issues like the BPL in the WBPL. Durbar Rajshahi players of the BPL recently protested against the franchise owners over unpaid salaries.

Nazmul Abedin signed off saying, “We are committed to addressing the technical and financial issues meticulously. These issues will not affect the women’s BPL. There were doubts whether we could successfully organize this BPL. Many franchises left during the transitions and we While some areas did not go as planned, our goal is to resolve these issues moving forward.”
