Devin Haney told Teofimo Lopez today on X: “You’ll make it” once he wins his May fight against Jose Ramirez in Times Square, Manhattan, New York, and his October rematch with Ryan Garcia.
Haney started by asking him why he didn’t take the fight with Subriel Matias, but he didn’t do well. He trashed Teo’s name, calling him “TeHOE” when asked why he wasn’t facing the powerful former IBF 140-pound champion Subriel (21-2, 21 KOs), which is not common for anyone from the division It would be a nightmare for Haney.
Teofimo gave these excuses for not fighting Matthias:
- Top Rank wanted the fight on the West Coast. Teo wanted him in New York City
- He put the fight on PPV
- 2.8 million dollars offered: Teofimo replied that he is the last star of Top Rank. He mentioned Keyshawn Davis as Top Rank’s apprentice, as his student, who are trying to transform themselves into a star.
If Haney can beat Ramirez and Garcia in their next two fights, a matchup against Teofimo would be important if he is undefeated this year. Lopez hasn’t said who he plans to fight next, but if he does face Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, he’s likely to lose badly.
He already has major issues trying to beat the 140-pound fighters. He was lucky in his fights against Sandor Martin and Jamaine Ortiz. Many people thought that Teofimo López the two fights.
Haney would be better off focusing on what’s in front of him right now: former WBC and WBO 140-pound champion Ramirez. This guy could beat Devin and taint his October rematch with Garcia.
Ramírez: The end of the line?
This fight was going to happen anyway, given that Turki Al-Sheikh wants to stage it in Riyadh. But it would take a lot of interest out of the game if Haney loses to Ramirez. I now predict that Haney will go 0-2 in his fights in 2025 and his career will be forgotten.
Devin can still continue to connect if he meets with promoter Eddie Hearn, who can put him in a Joshua-type four-fight rebuilding job for reform it to the factor’s specifications. Let’s face it: Haney was never that good to begin with, but he had done well because he melted down to fight smaller, at 135, and fought the right guy initially when he moved up to 140, Regis Prograis.
