Shakur Stevenson reiterated this week that he will never fight his good friend, Keyshawn Davis, regardless of the money he is offered. The WBC Lightweight Champion says he and Keyshawn used to go to gyms when they were younger and beat up different fighters. They got closer.
Stevenson says he and Keyshawn will “Taking control of the sport of boxing.So far, neither of these two fighters has shown the ability to be one of the best in the sport. Shakur has an outdated, boring Mayweather in his late-stage style, and Keyshawn has a similar style.
Weight Bully?
The difference with Keyshawn Davis (12-0, 8 KOs) is that he is huge for the lightweight division and should definitely be fighting at 147 instead of 135. He looks huge for a lightweight. If Keyshawn were to fight where he belongs at welterweight against killers like Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennishis career would be worth nothing.
Keyshawn’s promoters at Top Rank would probably never agree to allow him to fight Boots because his chances of success would be non-existent and their investment in his career would have been wasted.
Fighting smaller and bigger guys in the lightweight divisions, Keyshawn has a chance to become a champion, but not a star, while still young. If he moves to where he should fight at welterweight, he’s fodder for the fighters in that division.
“As we moved up, Keyshawn and I would go to all the gyms and whip each other’s a**. We’d go to the gyms and hit (the wrestlers) with some regular shit,” Shakur Stevenson told Cigar Talk’s. YouTube channel on why he will never fight Keyshawn Davis.
“Any gym. How high level. When I went to fight Lomachenko, Keyshawn was there beating up some other Olympic gold medalist. Keyshawn was always with me. Once you get to that level, we knew this day would come.
“It was only a matter of time. We knew we would both be able to hit (fighters) a** and take over the sport of boxing. Now, the fans are going to demand and want to see us wrestle,” Shakur said of fans starting to push to see him and Keyshawn wrestle in a division that doesn’t have name fighters at the top.
Undefeated, untried
Keyshawn failed at the 2020 Olympics, losing to Andy Cruz of Cuba. It was not a close fight. As professionals, Keyshawn and Shakur have yet to beat a top-level fighter. Shakur defeated several fighters big and small, Oscar Valdez and Jamel Herring, but he has not faced anyone at the highest level. That is why he has chosen to defend himself against Floyd Schofield. Shakur is desperate.
He’s been calling out Vasily Lomachenko and Gervonta Davis, but hasn’t gotten a bite from either of those fighters. One explanation for this is Stevenson’s dull style. He is constantly booed by fans every time he fights, and has no fan base outside of his hometown of Newark, New Jersey.
Keyshawn has never faced anyone with talent during his tenure and has shown zero interest in avenging his four losses to Andy Cruz. He seems keen to take the easy way out, challenging WBO lightweight champion Denys Berinchyk next month on February 14th. Davis says he believes a fight with WBA champion Gervonta Davis will happen once he wins the WBO title. This sounds like a dream.
“It’s not about the money,” Shakur said when told that Turki Al-Sheikh would likely offer him and Keyshawn a lot of money for the two to wrestle. “It’s not about the money. I’m not one of those (fighters) that makes me money, bro.”
It’s too bad Shakur doesn’t want to fight his friend, Keyshawn, because that could be his best option for a great lightweight matchup. Unless Turki offers Tank Davis mega-millions, this fight won’t happen for Stevenson. IBF lightweight champion Vasily Lomachenko probably won’t fight Shakur either because he’s approaching 37 years old and doesn’t want to fight a runner in this late stage of his career. If he were younger, Loma would take this fight in a second. Now, however, it doesn’t seem likely.
Once you take Tank and Lomachenko out of the equation, Keyshawn is the only one left for Shakur. William Zepeda is there, but he’s not going to give Shakur the kind of payday that a fight against Loma and Gervonta would.
