David Lynch, the writer and filmmaker whose work includes Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks, has died aged 78.
Lynch’s family announced his death on their Facebook page.
“There is a big hole in the world now that he is no longer with us,” the message reads.
“But as he used to say, ‘Watch the donut, not the hole.’ … A beautiful day with golden sun and blue skies all the way.”
During his career, Lynch received three Academy Award nominations as best director for his work on Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man, and Mulholland Drive.
His last major project was Twin Peaks: The Return, which came out in 2017 and continued the series that ran for two seasons in the early 1990s.
Lynch discovered last August he battled emphysema, a chronic lung disease, due to “years of smoking.”
The director said that despite the diagnosis, he is in “great shape” and will “never retire”.
