As a keen stand-up comedy fan, I’m disappointed at Tom Segura’s latest special saying, 2020’s A ball pig and 2023’s SledgehammerDid not hit the same with his earlier works, White girls with corners. Completely normal. Mostly storiesand Disgraceful. After pursuing his career from the beginning, I, like many other Segura fans, echo the same complaint: his huge success has made his comedy feel irritable, focusing on the experiences of life outside our pay degree. Disappointed by those failures, I went to his new Netflix Comedy series, Evil thoughtsWith protected enthusiasm, just to surprise on the best.
Channel the same awkward, uncomfortable energy as some Tim Robinson I think you should leave. Evil thoughts Refreshing because Segura does not weigh tired stories from his standup action. Instead, it plunges fully into an absurd dark comedy with a production style that is just Netflix Money could give this format.
Binge drinking at a breezy weekend, Evil thoughts Running about two hours in total, and by the end, you will be pleased to know that it has already been renewed for a second term.
Segua at its most diabolical
Evil thoughts Wasting no time offending your sensibility. A six -characters’ segua agent bakes murder by accidentally killing a woman and child, a soil herself from the stress, then running around naked while trying to speak his di -rin client off the shelf, unaware that they watch the entire tragedy develop in real time.
From this introductory skit that starts the series, Evil thoughts only continues to rise. Each chapter addresses common topics such as jobs, success, family, love, communication and health, with titles and skits that match these themes.
The execution is anything but ordinary, like a star serial murderer (where are the bodies, Garth?!) Taking advantage of the working class for song material, Steven Seagal Sexual is disturbing his way through a film set funded by Russian collusion, and a dissatisfied man launches a multi-chapter revenge arc after a white-collar worker named Evan ate the last piece of cake at an office party.
Each sketch works as an independent piece, but tips of continuity are pipped throughout, slowly revealing that everything happens in the same winding universe that segura is built into its booming humor.
For fans I think you should leave
Though much more deadpan than I think you should leave with Tim Robinson. Evil thoughts Carries the same uncomfortable energy through its sketches. Where Robinson shouts his way out of sticky situations, Segura stares you down until you bend. Both shows sit on the different sides of the same penny, leaving you with the same sick feeling when the envelope is pushed a little too far.
Fortunately, like the Robinson Show, only when the tension becomes unbearable, there is a cathartic relief as the pieces pay off, leaving you unbearably and a little less very than you were before you hit play.
Evil thoughts It’s not for everyone, but it’s a strong entry to the sketch comedy space that makes me hope that Segura continues. And who knows? Now that he has proved himself in the writers’ room, his next special standup may benefit from this discovery.
