Chelsea’s head, Enzo Maresca, and the scorer, Cole Palmer, chose to take the positive despite a 3-1 defeat against Bayern Munich on the return of Blues to the Champions League.
The Champions of the League and World Club League played the first game in the European Club Competition since 2023, but unlike 2012, when they raised the trophy, This trip to Allianz Arena for Chelsea was unhappy.
A goal from Harry Kane and Trevor Chabolah gave the victory to the German giants, but Chelsea worried his hosts in spells and removed one through the sublime of Palmer with the score 2-0.
And despite the result, Maresca insisted that he was satisfied with his players.
“I usually think the performance was quite good. We started very well in the first 20 minutes, creating two or three clear opportunities,” said Chelsea’s head to TNT Sports.
“Then, when we admit, we can avoid this type of goal. The game changed a little, but we were in the game, we scored a goal.
“We started the second half by creating possibilities and, after we granted the third goal, the game changed again.”
When asked what went wrong for his team in the second half with the score 2-1, Maresca said: “Nothing, unfortunately, unfortunately, we granted one more goal, which killed the game a little.
“But even with that, I think we were in the game. We try to the end, we scored another goal that, unfortunately, was out of play.
“I think we can learn a lot from this game. At times we were not good enough, but we can learn a lot.
“It’s a reality because the Champions League is this type of game, especially against Bayern, which is one of the favorites. But in general, I think we competed quite well.”
In the meantime, Palmer echoed the feelings of his manager and believes that the team did enough to show that they can compete with the big name clubs at this level.
“It was frustrating. I feel we deserved more,” said Palmer.
“We started well. We had the early possibilities to mark. But when you make mistakes at the highest level, it is difficult to return.
“Maybe the lack of concentration, not to manage the moments. But I think we have shown that we can play against one of the best teams in the competition.
“It’s a good learning curve. Back to the competition is nice. We must start from here.
“We have shown that we can compete.”
Chelsea is in action when traveling to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Saturday.
