India and the United States are holding a day of trade negotiations, providing hope that the bilateral agreement will be held soon.
The team headed by the US Trade Negotiator Brandan Lynch is in Delhi to meet officials from the Indian Ministry of Commerce.
India said the meeting does not mean the start of the next round of negotiations, describing it as a “discussion” about “trying” how to reach an agreement.
Negotiations on the trade agreement stopped after US President Donald Trump introduced A External 50% tariff on Indian goodspartly as a punishment for the purchase of Russia and weapons in Delhi. India defended its decision, citing the domestic energy needs and called the tariffs “unfair”.
Great responsibilities as well as strong criticism of India from Trump and its key officialsled to a rapid and strange deterioration of the ties between the allies.
India is the main exporter of goods including clothing, shrimp, gems and jewelry in the US, and tariffs already have affected the production and livelihood.
Thus, on Tuesday, the meeting of Indian and US officials is carefully observed.
“This is not an official round of negotiations, but it will definitely be a discussion on trade negotiations and to try to find out how we can reach an agreement between India and the US,” Mr. Lynch Rajes Agral, who is discussing on behalf of India, said on Monday.
After last month, the round of negotiations after Trump’s announcement and the refusal of India was abolished.
But in the last few days hopes have risen – the officials of the Trump administration sounded more conciliatory, and India has confirmed that the discussions were still ongoing.
On Monday, US Trade Advisor Peter Navaro told CNBC News: “India goes to the table. We’ll see how it works.”
Navaro was one of India’s most critics, calling a Russian war with Ukraine Indian Prime Minister Narendra “War Modi”.
In an interview with CNBC, Mr. Navaro also referred to the social media exchange last week between Trump and Modi.
Trump said the United States and India “continue to negotiate trade barriers” between the two countries. In response, Modi repeated the US president’s optimism and said that both countries were “close friends and natural partners”.
Sergio Mountains, the Nominee Trump, will become the next US ambassador to India, also stated that the trade transaction “will be resolved in the following weeks”.
“We are not so far from each other now. In fact, they are negotiating a sophisticated deal,” he said during the confirmation last week.
But still it is necessary to learn how countries solve key differences that previously prevented the transaction with materialization.
In particular, agriculture and dairy products are key points.
For years in Washington have Pressed for more access To the sector of the Indian agricultural sector, considering it as the main unused market. But India severely defended this, citing food security, livelihood and the interests of millions of small farmers.
Last week, US trade secretary Howard Lutnit repeated its former criticism of India’s fierce guarantees, asking why a 1.4 billion country does not “buy one corn bush”.
But Indian experts claim that Delhi should not give pressure to open their agricultural market, referring to national sovereignty and food security.
