Minnesota Vikings will be without quarterback JJ McCarthy for two to four weeks with an ankle injury, forcing them to resort to veteran Carson Wentz.
McCarthy, the first round of the Vikings by 2024, was diagnosed with a great ankle sprain, which suffered in a disappointing performance in The 22-6 defeat of Minnesota against the Atlanta Falcons Sunday.
After scoring three Touchdowns in the fourth quarter to lead the Vikings in the comeback in Week 1 against Chicago Baars, McCarthy endured a nightmare in Primetime against the Falcons. It ended 11 of 21 for 158 yards with zero touchdowns and two interceptions. It was plundered six times and smoked three times, one of which was recovered by Atlanta.
McCarthy missed his entire Rookie season with a torn meniscus and, after a home debut, main coach Kevin O’Connell expressed his disappointment that his quarterback will not learn from his first defeat.
“It’s crushing,” said O’Connell on Monday. “Because you just want it to be a daily process to activate all aspects of development and learning.”
Wentz will now take over, with the second global selection of the 2016 project that will begin for a sixth team in so many seasons.
The Vikings only signed Wentz on August 24, but O’Connell was impressed with the veteran in practice last week when he had to intervene by McCarthy, whose promise gave birth to his first child last Thursday.
“He (Wentz) was really impressive last week,” said O’Connell. “A kind of stepping on it, you felt the best presence of the command.
“He is really smart, a guy who has played a lot of football and has been able to reach a place where he was very comfortable in recent weeks if he had to go to the football game. And now he will have a week of preparation to prepare for playing.”
The Vikings are hosting the Bengals of Cincinnati, whose initial quarterback Joe Burrow is for three months with the grass finger, Sunday before the games against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns in Dublin and London respectively.
With a goodbye to week 6, McCarthy could return to action on week 7 against Philadelphia Eagles Defense Champion if the injury keeps it out of four weeks.
