Ted danson and Mary Steenburgen were honored with Bob Hope’s humanitarian prize in the 2025 Emmys.
The Cheese Alum, 77, and Oscar winner, 72, was the first couple to receive the accolade during the award show on Sunday, September 14, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Danson’s The good place costume Kristen Bell and the creator of the show, Michael Schur.

Steenburgen continued by sharing that the couple who received the award would have “edited the world” to their parents because it was about “living the lives they taught them to live.” She told the story of her father, a train leader, who “played back all the rules at work other than one. When he came across a man down on his luck and hid in a car in a box, he didn’t put them off the train. He left him riding. And though I was a child, I understood the beauty in that act of kindness.”
Danson, for his part, shared that his father was an archaeologist who “spent most of his life digging up and finding the remains of past cultures.” He explained that his father’s job has learned “This life is not just about us. Many people have come ahead and many people will come behind. It is about our stewardship of what we have been given.”
Steenburgen continued, “If it is true that life contains two emotions, love and fear, the world is a bit out of balance right now. We do not want to live in fear. So we work for organizations that move the scale away from fear and gives us a smack dab in the midst of love.”
The couple finished their speech by thanking their children and grandchildren, who called them “best teachers” and their “beloved community.”
“Together we have a sacred assignment to remind the world of his dreams, failures, laughter, courage and most especially his hope,” said Steenburgen, and Danson added, “We both feel very wonderful to spend our lives doing just that with you. Thank you for this honor.”
Bob Hope’s Humanitarian Award is presented by the TV Academy Board of Governors to individuals in the media industry “whose actions and actions have a lasting impact on communities and whose humanitarian efforts are an example Bob Hope’s Altruism decades and positive impact on society, ”according to a press release in July.
Danson is a long -lasting environmentalist and activist of an ocean conservation, while Steenburgen has collaborated with various organizations such as No Kid Hungry, Oceana and the Elizabeth Glaser’s AIDS AIDS Foundation. This marks the sixth time Bob Hope’s humanitarian prize has been distributed since it was established in 2002. Past recipients include Danny Thomas In 2004, George Clooney In 2010 and Sean Penn in 2022, among others.
Outside his humanitarian efforts, Danson is a two-time Emmy winner with trophies for an outstanding lead actor in a comedy series in 1990 and 1993 for his role as Sam Malone on Cheese. He has received 18 Emmy nominations throughout his career, including for his on -up performances Damage and The good place.
As for Steenburgen, she has one previous emmy goal for excellent lead actress in miniseries or special for The Atig: Hide Anne Frank in 1988.
