When Ishe Smith finally became the first home champion in Las Vegas in 2013, he stayed in the ring with tears running on his face, shouting: “Thirteen years! Thirteen years!” He had scratched and nailed the way there, and the belt was the test of everything he had given.
That night was the peak of a career based on the struggle and sacrifice. But the struggle more evidence of his life came years later, far beyond the ring.
Smith’s childish love, Latoy Woolen, was there from the outset. She was part of her story. Over The contestantsaid: “When he enters this ring, he does not fight for him. Fight for our family.”
But when his marriage was erased, Smith almost broke. Talking to the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNALadmitted:
“The gun was right there on the table before, loaded. It was at a time to remove the trigger. I was so depressed and so sad. My childhood love left me and took my children. It was so close.”
The only thing that stopped him was paternity. “The only thing that stopped me was to think of growing without a father. And I was like:” This is selfish. I can’t do them in the way my father made me. “And I didn’t.”
Remained. He remarried, had another son and even adopted two more children. He continued to build a family.
In 2017, Latoy was killed – shot at the back of the head near UNLV. He left behind three of Smith’s sons.
“When you grow up with someone like this, you share a lot of memories with someone, to have the murder without sense like that, it took me to treat me.” he said. “It was a difficult point of my career. It made me focus again -Me. I realized that now I fight against a different type of struggle.”
The ring no longer mattered in the same way.
After a brutal loss, his son begged him to stop. “I said,” It’s okay, I will never fight again. “” And it was like that. Smith moved away.
Today, at the age of 47, he works as a postman in Las Vegas. “At least when I go to this job, it’s an honorable job. Hard work rewards you with a hard day.” he said.
Ishe Smith’s story ceased to be on belts a long time ago. She lost her children’s mother, went through hell that most of us cannot even imagine, and somehow she still got up and went ahead. He fought for the ring, sure, but the struggle he took for his family was even older. Did not fold. Became the type of father and man that his children could look and say, This is my hero.
