Three Austrian nuns in the 80s escaped from the Old House, where they were placed and returned to their former monastery.

Sister Bernadett, 88 years old, Sister Regina, 86, and Rita’s sister, 82, are the last three nuns in the Kloster Goldentein monastery in Elsbete, near Salzburg.

They resumed access with former students and locksmiths.

The church authorities are not satisfied – but there are nuns.

“I’m so nice to be home,” Rita said. “I have always been in the house for care. I am so happy and grateful that I came back.”

The trio said that in December 2023, they were taken out of the monastery against their will.

“We weren’t asked,” Sister Bernad said. “We had the right to stay here for the rest of our lives, and it was broken.”

When the nuns returned to Schlos Goldstein, the monastery had no water and power, but the school still functioned

Three nuns spent most of their lives in Shlos Goldstein, a castle that has been a monastery and a private school of girls since 1877. The school, which started accepting boys in 2017, is still functioning.

Bernad’s sister attended the school, arrived in his teens in 1948. One of her colleagues was the Austrian actress Roma Schneider.

Sister Regina arrived in the monastery in 1958, and four years later Rita’s sister.

All three continued to work at school for years. Sister Regina was the director.

But the number of nuns decreased.

In 2022, the building was assumed by the Archdiocese of Salzburg and the Abbey of Reichersberg, the Augustine monastery. The wire Marcus Grasl from the Abbey became the chief of the nuns.

The community was officially dissolved in the early 2024, and the rest of the nuns were granted a lifetime right to residence as long as their health and mental capacity were allowed.

In December 2023, it was decided to move them to the Catholic House, where they were dissatisfied.

In early September, Sister Bernadet, Rita’s Sister and Sister Regina, moved back, was assisted by a group of former students.

“I was obedient all my life, but it was too much,” Sister Bernad said.

They packed a few things and returned to the monastery. The castles of their former apartments were changed, so a locksmith was summoned.

When they first arrived, there was no electricity and water.

In his statement, the protest Grasl said that the nuns’ decision to return to the monastery was “completely incomprehensible” and “escalation”.

“The numbers in the monastery are no longer used and in no way meet the requirements of proper assistance,” he said.

He said that “the uncertain conditions of the nun” means that “that an independent life in the Goldstein monastery is no longer.”

Grasl said that the house of old people provided them with “absolutely necessary, professional and good care.”

Many of the wishes of the nuns about the future of the monastery were taken into account, he added, including the continuation of the school.

Three nuns are settled again in their former home.

Now electricity and water compounds were partially restored, fans bring food and foods, and they were seen by doctors.

There is a stable stream of visitors, many of whom are their former students.

One of them, Sophie Tavsher, said that the nuns belong to the monastery. “Goldenstinin without nuns is simply impossible.”

“If we need us, they just have to call us, and we will be there.

Alish, another student, said the nuns always recognized the old students.

The video with the nuns were posted on Instagram, prayer, at Mass, for lunch and climbing a steep staircase.

They say their old ladder was torn after being taken away.

The nuns say they are determined to remain.

“Before dying in this old people, I would rather go to the meadow and went into eternity in this way,” Sister Bernad said.
