This is a huge moment for Brazil.
Former President Jiri Balssanar was convicted of attempting a coup and conducting an armed criminal group after playing the last elections that ended with his supporters attacking state buildings.
He is now facing a long prison term after the Supreme Court of Brazil came out of most of the three votes needed to find him guilty.
For many years, the Balsanar has severely divided the country into those who love him and those who hated him.
His supporters, who include President Donald Trump, called the trial as political persecution. Trump used it as an excuse to impose 50% tariffs on Brazil.
His critics praised the case as needed as needed, and to establish a precedent that attempt to undermine democracy will not be allowed.
This resolution is likely to divide the country further.
This test has swept Brazil because millions saw how live and television lives in their homes. And the storyline was no less dramatic than the series.
Many can recall the shocking points when on January 8, 2023, thousands of Bolsonar supporters attacked government buildings, in scenes reminiscent of the January 6 Capital riots in the United States two years earlier.
But during this trial, numerous evidence was revealed in court.
This includes this plan, developed by the Allies of Bolsonar, for the employees of the elite armed forces for the attempt on the elected President Luis Intyy “Lula” to Silva, his head and judge of the Supreme Court, Alexander de Moras, was printed in the presidential palace. It listed the “poison” as a method of destruction of the Lula.
Bolsonar’s lawyer was noticeably annoyed on behalf of his client when he claimed that there was no evidence that bind Bolsonar with this story or on January 8.
The court also reminded of Bolsonar’s attempts to be doubted in the electoral system. This included his meeting with foreign ambassadors at the Presidential Palace to make false claims about electronic voting before the elections, and state bodies impede voters from entering the polling stations – under the guise of “checking the state of vehicles” – on the day of voting.
At different times during this trial, the judges referred to the past Brazil. Its democracy is young – it was restored only in 1985 after two decades of the dictatorship, inciting a military coup backed up by the United States.
For Bolsonar’s critics, the parallels were cooled.
The judge leading the case – Alexander De Moraz – said that Brazil risk “slowly forget” that he almost returned to the dictatorship because “a criminal organization consisting of a political group does not know how to lose the elections.”
Brazil’s past was littered with upset or secured coups, but no one ever sat on the dock, and the past bars were given amnesties. Bolsonar’s critics hope to send this sentence to a clear signal: no more.
So what’s next?
Bolsonar will not receive punishment yet – but it could be handed over the rest of his life.
He will probably want to see his case to consider the entire Supreme Court, which includes some judges he has appointed the president but will need two of the five judges who plead not guilty to allow it. Only after all the requests were exhausted, can I go to Brazil.
Jair Bolsonaro did not appear in the courtroom for the sentences. His lawyer referred to health reasons. After he took office, he suffered various health problems after stabbed him with a presidential campaign.
In Brazil, there is a precedent that the convicts are provided with house arrest from age and health, which he could ask if he sentenced.
Congress – where the Bolsonar Party has a majority – also tries to promote the legislation that will give it an amnesty. One of the human rights defenders in the next year’s presidential election, which is closed to support Bolsonar, said he would give Bolsonar’s amnesty.
Thus, while this ruling is an important milestone, its punishment remains unclear.
