Germany’s surprise capitulation in Slovakia on Thursday night means that the pressure has increased ahead of the visit of North Ireland tomorrow.
The 2-0 mishap in Bratislava, his first defeat in a world cup qualifier, has caused many criticism from Pundits and former players.
Bastian Schweinsteiger stated that Germany had “lost its DNA” – The ability to win without playing well, and even CAP Julian Nagelsmann questioned the team’s lack of passion.
Although it was the first game of the group, there is now little space for a mistake for the four times world champions if they want to qualify directly for the summer sample coming to the United States, Mexico and Canada and to avoid play-offs.
With just five games to play group A, now you have to win the Northern Ireland visit.
And Nagelsmann waits much more from his team in Cologne.
He said, “I have confidence in the team. We have to approach the game as a semifinal of the Champions League. Otherwise we will play the play-offs in March. I have confidence in the team, but everyone has to realize that it is not enough to play with the brake of hand.
“Players have talked to each other. I think they feel what is needed now. The whole group has to bring energy. If we appear more energetically than today (against Slovakia), it will be a better game on Sunday.”
Northern Ireland of Michael O’Neill is in a much better position after the 3-1 victory in Luxembourg and travels to Cologne with humor.
Realistic, they would have oriented second place at best, and then they made their arm in the play-offs. But any kind of result tomorrow would launch them into the conversation for group winners.
O’Neill awaits a reaction from the side of the house.
“The message to the players when they met last Sunday was, if we return home with three points, it will be a good trip,” said O’Neill. “But if we return home with more than that, it will be a great trip. We have the opportunity to make a great trip now.
“We know there will be a German reaction to this result.
“I am sure they will be under a lot of scrutiny and critical in their own country. Maybe they are in a weak moment.
“I have played against Germany many times when they were world champions.
“I don’t think this team is at this level at this minute, but they have some excellent players and, like all German teams, they will have a reaction to this result and we must be ready for it.”
Nagelsmann suggested that he would not make significant changes, but could choose to add more bites to his team after they became a little lightly against Slovakia. This could mean memories for Leon Goretzka and Niclas Fullkrug.
O’Neill did not report new injuries after the Luxembourg game and will be able to call Conor Bradley and Paddy Mcnair again, who both had a few minutes valuable under the belt on Thursday.
Dan Ballard, Pierce Charles, Brodie Spencer and Paul Smyth did not make the template due to injury.
