Rock cable caused an accident, the first report said

Portuguese officials investigating the deadly accident on Wednesday in Lisbon say the cable on the route railway cut off, but the rest of the mechanism worked properly.

“After studying the debris on the spot, it was immediately determined that the cable connected by the two trolleys gave way,” the previous report said.

The wagons of the iconic Lisbon, 140-year-old Gloria-fununar railway are designed to travel up and down the steep slopes.

Sixteen people were killed and about 20 were injured when one of the cars broke on Wednesday night.

Five were killed by Portuguese, along with three Britons, two South Koreans, two Canadians, Americans, Ukrainians, Swiss and French national, police said.

Portugal Prime Minister Luis Montenegro called the incident “one of the greatest tragedies of our recent past.”
