In a strange turn of events during the ILT20 2025 match between Giants of the Gulf i Desert vipersnamibia Gerhard Erasmus he found himself sent back to the dugout without facing a single ball. This unusual incident happened on Tuesday (January 14) and has since been dubbed a “schoolboy mistake” by both fans and commentators.
Confusion arose in the 16th over of the first innings when Mohammad Amir dismissed Saghir Khanwhich prompted the Gulf Giants to send Erasmus as a Super Sub. However, a few moments later, the umpires informed the team that Erasmus would not be able to hit.
Andy Flowerthe Giants head coach, expressed his displeasure with the decision and was seen having a heated argument with the fourth official near the boundary line. Leslie Reifer, the match’s third umpire, later clarified that Flower had not adhered to proper procedure as he failed to notify the fourth umpire of the team’s intention to use Erasmus as a Super Sub.

Explaining the entire scenario to viewers, Reifer said: “Erasmus was not declared in the playing XI and the playing conditions clearly state that only the head coach can immediately notify the fourth umpire when a wicket falls or a batsman retires.
“As we saw there, our fourth umpire was not informed of the Super Sub. So Gerhard Erasmus had no reason and was not really in the middle because the process was not followed properly.”
Desert Vipers registered their second straight win this season, defeating Gulf Giants by six wickets. A solid unbeaten 42 off-road Sam Currantogether with Sherfane Rutherford’The explosive 40 off just 18 balls guided the Vipers to a comfortable chase, reaching the target of 120 in 17.4 overs.
Earlier, the Giants battled a disciplined bowling effort from the Vipers after being asked to bat first. Skipper Lockie Ferguson led the charge with an impressive three-wicket haul, while Amir contributed two wickets, restricting the Giants to a modest 119/9 in their allotted 20 overs. James Vince stood out as the only performer for the Giants, playing an unbeaten knock of 76 off 62 deliveries. However, lackluster support from the rest of the batting line-up left the team short of a competitive total.
