Feeling unsure about what style of carrier you need? Here’s a quick overview of the types of baby carriers to give you a better idea of how they differ.
Structured vectors: These are your standard carriers with shoulder straps, a waist belt and a support bag for the baby to sit on. The best thing about them is their adaptability for the size of the child, since they often fit until the child is 35 pounds or more. , and for all the positions that your baby might want to be in those first months. They are a bit big and bulky, however, compared to lighter carriers.
Wrap carriers: These are used for baby clothing, with just a long piece of cloth tied around your body and baby. We found these to be comfortable and breathable, but they are less secure and supportive, and they are really easy to use while the baby is quite small. It can be a good and affordable solution for children who just want to be carried or held close to you, however. It may take more of a learning curve to get the wrap right.
Ring slings: These are similar to wrap carriers, but use a single ring to secure the baby in a hip or inside position. They are light and breathable, but have a definite learning curve and also feel a little less secure than a structured carrier. They have more positions than a wrap carrier, though, and are easier to throw in a bag.
Careers for children: Babies can fit into many structured carriers, depending on the weight and size of your little one. But since children are mobile, often they are not happy to be attached to your chest as they were as a child (I know, I’m sad too). Hip carriers for children and seats are the alternative, where you strap on a waist belt with a small seat for your child to sit on.
