With six seasons, two films and a third on the road, Downton Abbey Could be one of the most successful period plays ever – and with good reason. The story of the Crawlys, a rich family running an estate in rural England, is full of drama upstairs down, romance, scandal and history. It begins in 1912, and the story continues all the way through 1926.
At the heart of this PBS series is the romance between Lady Mary Crawley (Michelle dockery), the oldest daughter of the family, and the relative of Matthew Crawley, (And stevens), which becomes the heir of the estate (not allowed to pass to a woman) when the previous heir dies aboard the Titanic. Mary’s two younger sisters, Edith (Laura Carmichael) and Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay), also seek marriages and boldly to dream more as rights for women begin to expand.
Downton staff also experience his fair share of romantic drama, especially between Mr. Valet. Bates (Brendan Coyle) and Lady Anna’s maiden (Joanne Froggatt). Perhaps the most memorable character of all is Lady Violet, Countess Dowager Snarky and Sharp, played by the late, great Maggie Smith.
